EXCHEQUER
Version 2.2
April 11, 1990
This version (2.2) of Exchequer is a minor upgrade/revision of the
program. The manual has been updated to reflect all of the changes.
If you have never used Exchequer, you can ignore this file and just
read the manual.
Perhaps the most visible change is that we have changed a few of the
key assignments. A summary of these new key assignments is included
with this document.
o Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End are no longer used to repeat a Find. These
keys have been replaced by Ctrl-PgUp and Ctrl-PgDn, respectively.
o Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End have replaced Home and End for moving to
the top and bottom of a file.
o Home now moves to the top of the current screen. End moves to the
bottom of the current screen.
o The Left and Right arrow keys can no longer be used to move around
the fields on a check form or within a find box. These keys are
now used to support Exchequer's enhanced editing capabilities (see
below). They have been replaced by Ctrl-Left and Ctrl-Right,
respectively. Tab and Shift-Tab can also be used to move around
the fields on all forms.
Although we hate to reassign keys, our users wanted some additional
ways to move around the screen plus improved editing capabilities and
this was the only was to do it that made any sense. We think the you
will find the new keys very intuitive after just a few minutes.
Other changes include:
o The starting location for the cursor has been changed in many
parts of the program. The overall goal is to reduce the amount of
keystrokes required to perform specific tasks. For example, when
Adding a Transaction (F9), the cursor starts on the payee field
since this seems to be where most people start. This allows you
to enter a few letters and press Ctrl-F to Find a memorized
transaction. Once the transaction is retrieved, the cursor is
automatically moved to the amount field so you can just enter the
amount and press F9 to save the new transaction. The other
changes are similar and should be both welcome and transparent
(unless you have written some keyboard macros for the program).
o The editing of text fields has been greatly improved. You can now
use the Left and Right arrow keys to move around within the field
and insert or delete characters. Pressing the Delete key will
delete the character at the cursor location. Pressing
Ctrl-Backspace will delete the entire field.
Most importantly, you can now edit existing text. When you move
to a field with text, the cursor is placed at the end of the
existing text. You can then edit the entry. If you want to make
a completely new entry, press Ctrl-Backspace to clear the field.
o When editing the date, Exchequer was not displaying the new date
properly once you left the date field (although it was using the
new date properly). This bug has been fixed.
o When entering data, you can clear the field by pressing
Ctrl-Backspace. This works with number, text, and date fields.
o You can now use the plus ('+') and minus ('-') keys to increment
and decrement all number fields. And here's a useful tip: If you
want to edit an existing number, press + or - first. You can then
edit the number using the Backspace key and the number keys.
o When creating a backup copy of an account, Exchequer now checks to
see if these files already exists. If they do, Exchequer asks you
if you want to replace them before it makes a backup copy.
o It is a good practice to give backup copies of any account a
unique name (even if you are backing up to a separate disk or
directory). Accordingly, Exchequer will now prompt you to enter a
unique name.
o The PgUp, PgDn, Home and End keys were not working properly when
Modifying a Check. This problem has been fixed. Note,
furthermore, that Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End have replaced the Home
and End keys for moving to the first and last memorized
transaction, respectively.
o Many users have requested a means for rapidly finding a sequence
of check numbers (e.g. 1340, 1341, 1342, etc.). We have expanded
the Find function to provide a way to do this. First, find the
first check in the sequence using the Find function (Ctrl-F). To
find the next highest check number, press the '+' key. This is
similar to pressing Ctrl-PgDn to repeat a find, except Exchequer
will automatically increment the check number it is searching for
by 1. Likewise, you can press the '-' key to search for the next
lowest check number.
Exchequer assumes that checks are listed in ascending order.
Since Exchequer automatically stores checks in chronological order
first, then in ascending check order, this will usually be
correct. If your checks are out of sequence, this feature will
not find the next check in the sequence. Also, Exchequer will
increment or decrement the check number it is trying to find even
if the present search is unsuccessful. This allows you to skip
over gaps in check numbers and still find the next check in the
sequence.
This feature works only when working with the Register Screen, not
when modifying checks. It is especially useful when balancing
your checkbook since you can easily find all of your checks in
sequence and mark them as cleared. It is also useful when you
have two or three sets of check numbers (e.g. continuous-feed
checks and a separate checkbook for both you and your spouse).
o When working with a split transaction, you can return from the
split display to the check form by pressing F9. This will not
save your new data.
o With Version 2.1, you could only start Exchequer from within the
directory which contained the files XC.EXE and XC.CFG. You can
now start Exchequer from any directory if your PATH statement
includes the directory containing XC.EXE and XC.CFG (they don't
even have to be in the same directory). In addition, the program
configuration file (XC.CFG) MUST include the name of the directory
containing your account files (this directory does not have to be
on your PATH). See your DOS manual for further information about
the PATH statement.
o When modifying a transaction in the register or a memorized check,
Exchequer will now ask you if you want to save any unsaved changes
before leaving a specific transaction or check. In Version 2.1
you could lose these modifications if you forgot to press F9
before pressing ESC, PgUp, PgDn, etc.
NOTE: IF you exit the program directly while modifying a
transaction or check by pressing F1 or Ctrl-F1, Exchequer will not
ask you if you want to save any changes before quitting even
though it will ask you if you want to save your data. The data
which is saved will not include your changes unless you have
pressed F9. Although this shortcoming should not be a problem
under normal circumstances, it will be corrected in the next
version.
o When printing a report to the screen, the display speed is now
independent of machine speed. In earlier versions
